Pull Over When You See a Blue Light Behind You
When you see a flashing blue light approaching from behind, it’s not a police officer—it’s one of your local volunteer firefighters responding to an emergency. In New York State, these blue lights are permitted for volunteer firefighters in their personal vehicles as they make their way to the firehouse.
It’s important to understand that blue lights do not grant any special driving privileges. Volunteers are still required to obey all traffic laws. The purpose of the light is simply to request a courtesy from other drivers—to yield, when safe to do so, so they can get to the fire station as quickly as possible.
Every second counts when someone’s home, life, or safety is at risk. When you pull over, you’re helping ensure our team can respond faster to emergencies in our community.
Please remember:
- Blue lights are not emergency vehicles.
- Volunteers cannot legally go through red lights or exceed speed limits.
- Yielding is a courtesy—not a requirement—but one that can make a big difference.
