Brush Fire At Gabreski Airport
On Thursday, August 12th at approximately 1:30pm the department was dispatched to a brush fire on the north side of Gabreski Airport behind the gun range. The first arriving Engine 7-8-1 stretched a booster line over the berm at the back of the range and began knocking down the fire. The Stumpjumper 7-8-12 made its way around the range and extinguished most of the fire. Due to the weather conditions and nature of the pines, two additional Stumpjumpers were requested from Quogue and East Quogue. All three trucks fully extinguished the fire and searched for any remaining hot spots. Units were on scene for approximately two hours.
Our department responded with two engines, the Stumpjumper and the Tanker, as well as Fire Police. The Air National Guard fire department also responded, and the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance stood by at the scene. No injuries were reported.
