Fire Breaks Out Early Sunday Morning
The Westhampton Beach Fire Department was paged out for a structure fire on Peters Lane in Westhampton at approximately 2:45 AM on Sunday morning. First Assistant Chief Darryl Schunk was the first volunteer on scene. He reported smoke and fire in the basement of a one story single family residence. He was told that all the members of the family living in the house had evacuated. 7-8-1, the department’s first due engine, arrived less than a minute after the chief. The crew ran one hose into the basement via a rear entranceway and quickly had the fire extinguished. Fans were brought in to clear the basement of smoke and the firefighters spent approximately an hour doing overhaul, tearing down sheetrock and ceiling tile to expose any residual pockets of flame. All units were back in service by about 4:00 AM.
The department responded with three engines, a tower truck, and a rescue truck. There were three chiefs on scene as well as fire police. The Southampton Town Police Department also responded as did the Southampton Town fire marshal. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
